Well done to Ann Mc Farland

The club would like pass on their congrats to Ann Mc Farland who came seventh in the UCI World Master's Championships last week and fourth in the World Cup. Coming back from a hard year of illness and personal sadness she struggled to get back on form to tackle this event. For all women out there Ann is an example of what can be achieved against all the odds if you have the guts and determination. She is an inspiration to us all. Ann is always battling away in our road races and putting many of the men to same each Tuesday night.

Inishowen 100 report

Sun 15th August, Foyle CC hosted the Inishowen 100 cycle Tour. Omagh Wheelers were out in force, with a mixture of touring and racing riders taking part. Assembly point was Extreme Cycles at 7.00am. Temperatures were low with a lingering mist present. However as the mist lifted it proved to be a glorious sunny day. The tour started and finished at Templemore Sports Complex. In all 175 riders, clubmen and independents took part. There truly is a good feeling riding in a peloton this size. The early miles saw the group wind in round Buncrana and on for Mamore Gap. From the distance this didn't look too bad but once on the hill opinions quickly changed. The scene was like a mountain stage of the 'Tour De France'. Riders were up out of the saddle swinging handle bars from one side to the other as every inch of power was pushed through the pedals. Riders received a welcome cheer from a large crowd at the top. The was not a rumour, Mamore is tough. Once the obligatory pictures were taken, next came the decent. This was tricky, high speeds and a narrow windy road spelled disaster for some riders. For these men their day was over. Thankfully all of the Omagh Wheelers negotiated the terrain without injury. The Tour headed for Ballyliffin, Carndonagh and looped up round Malin Head where the first tea stop was positioned. Next we headed for Kinnegoe Bay, however hill after hill 'punched' at the riders will to get round. With around 70miles on the clock Kinnegoe to Greencastle proved to be a massive ask of all concerned. There wasn't much chat in this section. The second pit stop in Greencastle was like an oasis. Riders lay like grey seals soaking up the sun. The job wasn't finished just yet. The spin back to base was a delight in the sunshine, it seemed as if we were on the Continent. Well done to all Omagh Wheelers who took part, Enda Harper, Brian Mimnagh, Sean McLaughlin, Roger Harkness, Ivor Martin, Kevin McDaid, Danny Whyte, Seamus Keenan, Paul Coyle, Eunan McCarron, Liam Harte and Gerard Crawford. Those were hard earned T-shirts.

Congratulations to Gavin Mc Kernan who has won the hill climb league for 2010, and to James Mc Girr who won the visitor league.

Sunday 22nd August - Tour of the North Coast

Also on Sunday Bann Valley promote their leisure Tour of the North Coast. The event starts from Portglenone Community Centre. Further details will be added as soon as we receive them.

Sunday 22nd August - Ulster Road Race Championships

On Sunday 22nd August Draynes Farms and Phoenix CC will host the Ulster RR Championships 2010 on the Dundrod circuit. All races are pre-entry, the forms for which can be downloaded from the Phoenix CC Message Board.
The Ulster Senior Men's Champions will also receive the George Wilkes Memorial Cup which was won by Thomas Martin last year.
Sign on will be at the Lamh Dearg centre on the Hannastown Rd just outside Belfast (paste 54.587769,-6.036494 into google maps for a location) and NOT in Crumlin as advertised in the CI calendars. Sign on will commence at 9:30 and will close at 10:30. The racing will begin at 11:00 from the start/finish line at the motorbike pits, see map below for details. There will be no organised roll out to the start/finish line from Lamh Dearg.
It is regretted that, due to the new CI regulations regarding race distances, male A4 riders will not be able to compete in the Elite race due race distance restrictions. There will, however, be a separate A4 race held, which will start after the woman’s race has finished. This race is a normal A4 race and ie NOT an Ulster Championship.
Due to the shorter distance of the woman’s race, A4 category women can ride in the championships and will receive a short handicap, again due to the new regulations.
There will be championship races for juniors, seniors and veterans who are not A4s and all women. All entry fees are £10/€10 except juniors who pay £5/€5.
Distances are:

Juniors and seniors: 9 laps = 66 miles aprox.
Vets: 7 laps = 50 miles aprox.
Women: 4 laps = 30 miles aprox.
A4 race: 4 laps = 30 miles aprox (starts after the woman’s race has finshed).
(Please note race distances may have to be changed on the day.)

JP 5th in Billy Stewart Cup

Derrymacash resembled the South of France at the beginning of the Apollo promoted Billy Stewart Cup as riders put on the sun cream on what was one of the hottest days of the year. In total 58 riders signed on for the 7 lap event with the A4 riders receiving a 7 minute handicap.

It was soon evident that this would not be enough as the limit group had clawed back almost 2 minutes after only 10 miles of racing, the 16 hardy souls pushed on regardless and held out until the 4th lap when they were hauled back in and the race all came together.

The status quo was not to remain like this for long with a strong Newry team constantly on the attack. The constant pressure soon paid off and with 2 laps remaining seven riders Stephen McAllister(Ballymoney) Darren Weir (Dromara CC) John Paul Connelly (Omagh Wheelers) Desi Foley & Nathan Morgan (Newry Wheelers) John Madden (Curran Racing) and Kyle Houston (Phoenix CC) slipped of the front of the bunch.

Over the rise

At the start of the final lap the break had 1 minute and did not look like being caught and the race stayed like this until the end. Nathan Morgan took up the sprint with about 1km to go and was quickly followed by Stephen McAllister. These two drew away from their break companions with McAllister proving strongest at the line. John Madden led the other over the line followed by Darren Weir, John Paul Connelly, Desi Foley and Kyle Houston. Kyle Houston took the A3 prize with Conor Judge of the promoting club Apollo the best A4 rider.

Pod tops the podium

Well done to Pod Graham who won the road race in Tempo last Wednesday night promoted by Lakeland.

Andrew, Ivan Reid and Eugene Power worked tirelessly in the second group to stay away from scratch, with Pod taking the uphill sprint finish and Ivan in 3rd.

The route was Omagh, Beragh, Sixmilecross, Carrickmore, Omagh. There were 3 groups on the night with the front group getting 3 minutes on the 2nd and middle group getting 2 and half to scratch.

Tuesday 20th July saw Omagh's forth road race of the year. This was a tough 40 Mile race starting from Omagh, making its way to Castlederg, then over Scraghy to Ederney then finishing at Drumlish. The race was part sponsored by Mc Laughlin Plant Sales, Drumquin.

There was a big turn out on the night with almost 50 racers signing on split into 3 groups, with time handicaps of 4 and 3.5 minutes respectively. The second group caught the first around Killen, with the scratch group catching the second 400 yards from finish. But by this time 2 riders namely Ivan Reid and Adam Lyons had attacked the main group and got away with Adam taking the line, and Ivan finishing second.

Paul Mulligan then took the bunch sprint for third.

The rest of the placing's will follow as soon as they are available.

Mulligan Wins Sport Active Women's RR League

At the Madigan GP today the final round of the Martin Birney sponsored Sportactive Womens League was won by Ciara McManus (U/A) who came in 15" ahead of Ciara Mulholland Clann Eireann, with Geraldine Gill (Bohermeen CC), however this would not effect the league as Julie Mulligan (Omagh Wheelers) had done enough to travel to Carrick today as the winner, Mulligan was presented with her trophy by Stephen Burns on behalf of Martin Birney.

Draw winners

Congregations to Vincent Mc Carron and Laurence Strain who won the Monthly prize draw of £100 for July and August.

Members are still been urged to get involved in this draw as it could bring much needed funds to the club if everyone would take part.

Omagh 3 day major success

The inaugural Omagh Wheelers 3- Day came to a close today and was hailed by everyone involved as a huge success.

The action all began on Friday evening when 49 riders from 15 different teams ranging from the best of local club cyclists to teams from as far away as Clann Eireann and North Pole lined up to take on the 3.8 mile straight time trial on the Dromore Road.

It was evident from the outset that the pace was going to be high over the weekend with the top ten riders averaging close to 30 MPH on the fast course. Surprise winner on the night was the late entry of East Tyrone rider, Gary Jeffers who recorded a time of 7 minutes and 55 seconds, just edging out Lakeland’s Kenny Boylan on 7.58. Local man, Adam Lyons ( Team Basso)was just 2 seconds adrift on 8.00 while last week’s Lakeland 2 day winner, Gavin McKernan (Omagh A) was a further 2 seconds back. Just 30 seconds separated the top ten riders which set the scene for an exciting 2 days of racing to come.

At noon on Saturday the riders, undeterred  by the damp conditions, set off on the first road race, starting from Youth Sport on the Cookstown Road. This 30 mile event would see the riders take on the challenge of the rolling hills of Creggan, Greencastle, and Gortin before the infamous climb over Gortin Glens to the finish line on the outskirts of Omagh. After Friday evening, Jeffers was in yellow and was happy to sit in the pack and watch while various early attacks were launched but eventually brought back into the pack. Adam Lyons made his intentions clear from an early stage taking the King of The Hills at both Mountfield and Greencastle.

As expected, the Glens split the race wide open but most of the riders in the top overall positions safely made it over the top together, with Lyons yet again taking maximum King of the Hills points at the summit. On the descent the pace eased again allowing a group of around 20 riders to assemble and make their way back into Omagh and the finish line. The inevitable sprint finish was won by Lyons, with Jeffers and Lakeland’s Raymond Kerr in hot pursuit. With all the front group riders finishing together though, the result made no difference to the overall standings and the time gaps remained as they were after Friday evening’s time trial.

The third and final stage ensued on Sunday at noon with the riders leading out on a rolling start from the premises of co-event sponsors, Xtreme Cycles on the Derry Road, Omagh. This much anticipated 40 mile stage was to take the riders through Drumquin and onto Castlederg before a left turn for Scraghey and Ederney before another left and into Lack with the finish line close to Drumlish School.

On this stage the pace was sharp from the outset with a number of gallant breakaway attempts, from Lakeland riders in particular. As expected, the field split decisively though on the climb at Scraghey with a group of about 12 riders first over the summit. This time Ivan Reid (Derg Arms) took maximum points on the King of the Hills but Lyons had by this stage accumulated enough points to ensure he was outright winner of King of The Hills. Within the top group however was the yellow jersey of Jeffers and it became clear that he was not going to relinquish his lead easily. A very fast run into Ederney ensued with a group of about 20 riders setting the pace.

Seamus Keenan (Omagh A) then took many by surprise when he broke clear on the climb through Lack and with just 2 mile to the finish line had built up  a lead of 27 seconds. This however before Jeffers, aided by East Tyrone team mates, decided to take control and work together to reel him back in with less than a mile to go. And so another sprint finish was to ensue with Lyons first to the line again just ahead of Jeffers and Lakeland’s Mark McGirr. The front group, now of around 16 riders, all recorded the same time which again meant no change in the overall classification from the Friday night.

Jeffers then was to prove a worthy winner with Kenny Boylan second. Adam Lyons rode outstandingly to take third overall, King of The Hills and first Omagh Wheeler. Gavin McKernan continued his excellent run of form to take fourth spot ahead of Lakeland’s Mark Kavannagh and William Dunlop.

7th Place went to Omagh Wheeler’s Seamus Keenan with

Lakeland’s Neil Armstrong, Fergus McGirr, and Omagh Wheeler Kieran Logue (Derg Arms) rounding of the top ten.

In the team classification, with 15 different teams taking part, the Lakeland team of Kavannagh, William and Julian Dunlop held of the challenge of the Omagh team of McKernan, Keenan and Paul Coyle to win with a margin of just 4 seconds. East Tyrone rider Ann McFarland put in a top performance on Sunday in particular to claim the first lady prize.

The Club would like to thank all those who made the event a great success, from the excellent marshals, Paul Devenney, Trevor Lecky, Donal Deery, leo Mc Kenna and Anthony Mc Girr, through to all those worked tirelessly behind the scenes, Hugh Mc Cann, Enda Harper, Sean Mc Laughlin, Brian Mimnagh, Paul Mc Memamin and Seamus Keenan and a massive thanks to Patrick Withers who keep the whole event running perfect as head commissaire. And a big thanks to all our sponsors, to whom the Club is greatly indebted.

Got your entry in for next year yet!!!
