Road Race - 24th June
Tuesday 24th June saw the 3rd RR of the Wheelers Club
Racing
Championship sponsored by
Curran
Optometrists.
It was a 29 mile Road Race on the Seskinore Circuit x
3 (Syonfin finish).
The race was handicapped with 3 groups with a 5
minute gap from the first group to the middle group
and 3.30 minutes from scratch to the middle group.
Scratch rode steady from the gun and caught the
middle group on last lap, the front group after
steady riding was then caught 3 miles from Fintona
on the last lap.
From here the groups rid at a steady pace until the
foot of Syonfin where Brian attacked before being
pulled back in. Paul then attacked and pulled
a gap which he maintained to the finish line.
Brian and Ondrej chased hard but could not close the
gap which Paul had opened, Brian took the line just
ahead of Ondrej. These two where followed in
by Richard and John Paul.
Well done to all who took part on a very cold and
wet night. Also many thanks to all who
organized and marshaled and help make the race as
safe as possible.
Top 5 results are as follows:
1 Paul Mulligan - Omagh Wheelers
2 Brian Mimnagh - Omagh Wheelers
3 Ondrej Slobodnik - Omagh Wheelers
4 Richard Lyons - Omagh Wheelers
5 John Paul Connolly - Omagh Wheelers
The rest of the results will be posted when they
become available.

Autoline - Newry Wheelers Three Day
Omagh Wheelers had huge success on the Autoline 3
Day with Brian coming in a brilliant 3rd overall and
Gavin coming in a fantastic 5th overall. Brian
& Gavin also came into the KOH rankings and Brian
also got into the top 10 of the Sprinters
Competition. OW's also picked up 1st place on
the team prize by a considerable margin, which is
testament to the hard riding which took place over
the 3 days by all of the team members.
To top it all Brian has reached the elite rank of 1st Cat
and Gavin has reached Cat 2 status after the points
they both picked up this weekend, this a major feat
for both of them in their 1st year of racing.
Stage 1
This stage was at Warrenpoint which was 20 laps of a
2 mile crit. This resulted in very hard racing
with very high speeds throughout. Brian, Gavin
& Richard all finished in the bunch at the end with
no one getting away on the night. Mark ended
up a lap down due to a puncture and Sean ended up 2
laps down. The stage was won by Liam Curran,
Curran Racing.
Stage 2
The 2nd stage took in 3 laps of the Hilltown circuit
before a final lap into
Rostevor and back to Hilltown. Brain and Gavin
both managed to make the break on the 3rd lap with
about 10 other riders. From this break Brian
picked up 3rd on the stage and Gavin came in 4th.
Mark & Richard both finished comfortably in the
bunch and Sean was badly affected by cramp in the
last 10 miles of the stage. The stage was won
by Colin Robinson, Stamullen.
Stage 3
This was a 4 mile Time Trial
from Warrenpoint to Newry. This was an
extremely important stage for Brian and Gavin to
hold their GC positions, due to so many TT
specialists in the field. Brian managed to
hold onto 3rd place with a time of 8:52 and 13th
place, Gavin lost
a place with a time of 9:12 and 28th place. Richard put in an
effort for the team prize with a time of 9:15 and
30th place.
Mark saved himself knowing that their was a huge
effort required for the 2 boys up in GC on the
Sunday Stage. Unfortunately Sean was late for
his time slot on the TT so he was fined time which
resulted in the end of his race but it was good
experience and training given he's just back on the
bike after a lay off. The stage was won by NI
10mile champion John Heverin, Clann Eireann with a
time of 8:09.
Stage 4
This was the hardest stage of the 3 days with
conditions and terrain playing havoc with the field.
The stage was lightening quick from the gun and the
1st 10mile saw an average of 30mph.
Unfortunately OW's missed the break which went after
15 mile, this break pulled out a lead of 2mins 30
sec's on the field which turned GC on its head with
both Gavin & Brian loosing their places on the road.
This required for a lot of hard riding and efforts
from Omagh, Newry, Phoenix, Dundalk & Stamullen to bring the
break back. The break was caught in the last 4
mile with 1 lone rider up the road who was caught
100 meters from the line by the bunch. This
meant that Brian held onto 3rd place and Gavin his
5th place and Omagh Wheelers won the team prize.
The stage was won Kevin Lynch, Newry Wheelers who
was the overall winner.
This is probably Omagh's biggest racing success in
its history and the experience gained will be
invaluable in the future. Some of the boys
that raced would like to thank Stephen Mc Kenna for the "speed aids"
and for everyone else who lent kit for the
3 day as they where greatly appreciated and needed.
Brian, Mark, Sean & Richard would also like to thank
Paul Mulligan for the advice and mentoring over the
winter & racing months, those hard, cold, wet
mornings & nights paid dividends over the weekend.

Carrickmore - Omagh circuit.
The race was handicapped with 3 groups with a 3
minute time gap from the first group to the middle

caught the middle group on the descent into
Carrickmore. The first group was then caught
just before the turn from Carrickmore back down to
Omagh.
From this point there was a lot of hard riding with
several attacks taking place. The race winning
move was made by Paul &
Ondrej just after Drumnakilly. From
here Paul and
Ondrej managed to say away from the chasing
pack with Paul winning the sprint to take the line.
Brian out sprinted the chasing pack to take 3rd.
Well done to all who took part who had to endured
the horrific shower at the end of the race, I never

Interclub - Cookstown 12th June
The 3rd round of the interclub took place on the
12th June as hosted by East Tyrone on the Cement
Works circuit.
The 'A' race was dominated by Omagh with Gavin
making a break from the 'B' group and completing a
mini epic to ride a 25 mile solo effort to take the
line 30 sec's ahead of the next group. Gavin
was followed in by Paul, Ondrej & Brian who came in
15 sec's ahead of the main bunch after a break in
the last 5 mile.
The 'B' race was a much closer affair as it took a
bunch sprint to decide the eventual winner,
which was won by a Lakeland rider. The first
Omagh man across the line was Philip Caldwell who
took 2nd place.
Unfortunately there was a crash in the bunch sprint
in which Eugene Power was taken down along with a
few other riders from various clubs.
Thankfully for Eugene he has been informed after a
night in hospital that he has just suffered some bad
cuts and a lot of bruising. Everyone would
like to wish him a speedy recovery.

He managed to make it into the break with Gavin and
used all his experience to pick up 3rd and continue

Emyvale GP
A good number of Omagh Wheelers competed at Sunday’s

from all over Ireland. Brian Mimnagh came home in a
brilliant sixth place in the A event, while Gavin
Callaghan had similar success in the senior three
category.

InterClub - Omagh 20th May
There was double success for the Omagh Wheelers’ at
last Tuesday’s inter-club road race when Paul
Mulligan won the A race, while Eugene Power sprinted
to victory in the B race.
Both races were 32-miles long over a very hilly
course from Omagh to An Creggan, through
Greencastle, Gortin, up the Glens and finising on
the Gortin Road, outside Omagh.
Omagh was well represented, with solid performances
from Brian Mimnagh, Richard Lyons and Seamus Keenan,
in the A race, while Joe Morris, Vincent McCarron
and veteran, Phillip Caldwell, rode well in the very
competitive B race.
But it was Mulligan and Power who claimed maximum
points for the Omagh club, against the best racing
cyclists from four other local cycling clubs -
Fintona, Lakeland, East Tyrone and Emyvale.
Thanks to all the Omagh Wheelers marshalls for their
invaluable help.

finding the pace to his liking, over this undulating
course. Mark went of in the third group of the four
and was riding strongly until the hills slowed the
pace, as it all came together on the last lap it was
down to the wire for the to Omagh rider with a bunch
sprint of over forty riders, Seamus lead the bunch
out with speeds over forty miles an hour this suited
Mc Aleer to move through the field to claim fifth
place.

Important InterClub News
The InterClub league has become a victim of its
own success in recent years with large numbers
turning up every night for a slice of the action.
However this year, with the numbers allowed to take
part in a road race greatly restricted, it was clear
that the league could not continue in its original
form.
At a meeting held on Friday 2 May 2008, with two
representatives of each participating Club in
attendance, following lengthy debate, it was agreed
that two races will be introduced for the 2008
season.
The races will be split depending on rider ability
with the top riders from each Club taking part in
the A Race, and those less accomplished riders
taking part in the B Race.
In order to reduce delays and any contentious issues
on the night, those present at the meeting agreed to
the split in riders as listed below. There can be no
deviations from these groupings other than in very
exceptional circumstances. Any such changes can only
be made through your club racing representative (in
the case of Omagh Wheelers, this is Mark McAleer
0797979 6911).
In the lists below, Omagh Wheelers would like to
point that if any of their ICF members are not
listed, this is not intentional and if you wish to
participate, please contact Mark McAleer.
Organisers also agreed to the following:
A Race time gap: Scratch to Second Group – 1 minute
45 seconds for each 10 mile, (ie 10.5 seconds per
mile).
B Race time gap: Scratch to Second Group – 1 minute
for each 10 mile, (ie 6 seconds per mile).
Entry Fees will be £3 or 5 Euro.
Please Note that NO CLUB JERSEY-NO RACE
This year’s team time trial event will be hosted by
Emyvale CC (Tydavenet course)
The first race will take place on Tuesday night (6th
May) at Tydavenet (Emyvale circuit, as used last
year). The A Race will commence at 7.30pm sharp,
followed by the B Race at 7.35pm. The race consists
of two laps of an 11 mile circuit.
Good Luck to all Omagh Wheelers members!

MC CANN
CUP
The 6th annual McCann Cup Road
Race, promoted by Omagh Wheelers Cycling
Club, took place Sunday 13th April, with over 100
riders signing on for the racing it has been deemed
a great success.
The 'A' race was won by Paul
Kane, Northern-Dave Kane Cycles who won the sprint
on the 5 man break away. Omagh Wheelers scored
points with Paul finishing a fantastic 5th.

The 'B' seen 2 Omagh Wheelers
in the points with John Paul coming strong in the
sprint and taking the race and maximum points by the
smallest of margins, so a big congratulations to JP.
Brian was also in the points where he came in 4th,
this gave Brian the required points to be upgraded
to the Cat 2 ranks. Again this has been just
reward given his aggressive riding this season.
Lets hope he can make an impact on the Cat 2 ranks.
Omagh Wheelers would like to
extend a huge thank you to all riders, marshals,
organizers and anyone who helped out on the day.
A huge thank you is extended to Hugh McCann, McCann
Building and Maintenance Contractor for his
continued support on the event.

North/South Trial
OMAGH Wheelers Cycling Club members had a
busy weekend with the running of their first
official cycling event of the year - the
annual 50-mile North-South Trail.
All those who entered seemed to enjoy and
complete the cycle at a controlled and
leisurely pace, while a few hardcore racing
cyclists used the event as preparation for
the upcoming McCann Cup road race.
The Trail took riders on a scenic tour from
Omagh, through Beragh, Eskra, Fintona onto
Dromore, where they were generously
re-fueled by Eugene Montague at his shop.
Regrouped and revitalized the cyclists made
their way over Dooish through Drumquin to
Envagh crossroads where they turned right up
the Drumlegagh Road and back to Omagh
Leisure Complex for much needed showers,
soup, sandwiches, tea and coffee.
Noteable performances on the bike were from
Mark Sweeney, who was first home along with
Seamus Keenan, Enda Harpur and Austin
McGrath. Paul McMenamin also did well to
cycle the 50-miles on his mountain-bike and
keep pace with the racing bikes.
Laura McAleer and Terry McCabe proved their
stamina too by cycling the entire 50-miles
after they had both completed the Omagh
Half-Marathon the previous day.
2007 leisure cyclist of the year, Daniel
Whyte rode the course at his ease and gained
valuable leisure points as he bids to retain
his title.
The club wishes to thank all 50-plus
cyclists who signed on to support the event,
especially those from various cycling clubs
across the west of the Province. They have
much appreciation to leisure event
organisers Fran O'Doherty and Terry McCabe
who both put in a tremendous amount of
personal effort to make the Trail such a
success.
Thanks are also extended to Gallen Vehicle
Hire, Leo McKenna for providing back up and
to the tea ladies, Carmel, Holly and Tara.
